Reading – The Learning Journey

Reading is one of life’s most essential requirements. To get the best possible start in life, children should be introduced to reading and books. When introducing books to a child you should avoid over complicating things – keep it simple.Children will want to learn if you make the subject matter fun as reading will not seem like a chore to them.

Where should I start?

You need to start with the basics so introduce the child to the letters of the alphabet. Teach the shapes and sounds a letter makes.Once the child has mastered this step you can start pairing the letters together.Always speak loudly, slowly and clearly.Flashcards can be bought specifically for this part of the process.

Progressing from letters to words

When the child is ready you can progress forward with phonics books and worksheets.Look for books with big bold and uncluttered images and a large typeface. As with the start of the process you should continue to keep the activity fun.The child will be more willing to learn if you keep the process more like an activity than a classroom lesson.
If you ask the child to choose the book they will feel even more engaged in the process.Try and break the reading down into bite sized pieces so as not to over face the child. With a little encouragement your child will master the process in the end.

Encouraging the child to read

Your childs interest in books will naturally develop as you read to them.Pay attention to the books you child enjoys reading.Ask them to read aloud to you.Bedtime is an ideal time to enjoy a book together.Bedtime is one of the best times to read a book together.Reading at bedtime is always a great time to read with your child. Variety is another way to keep boredom at bay. Offer a wide range of books and stories. You don’t simply have to stick to books, you can read comics and magazines. You can encourage them to read recipes whilst having fun with you in the kitchen.A recipe book is another great read, plus the child gets to have fun with you in the kitchen. No matter what you choose to read with your child you should always remember to be supportive.
