The capital city of South Australia, Adelaide is well known for its gracious churches, well tended gardens and lovely buildings.  Located on the Torrens River, there are lots of places to visit for the culturally inclined visitor .  Pay a visit to St Peters Cathedral, St Francis Xavier Cathedral and the Holy Trinity Cathedral.   The South Australian museum has a spectacular whale display as well as an amazing collection of exhibits covering Aboriginal history and the Dreamtime.

You can also view these at the Tandanya Aboriginal Culture Institute.  North Terrace is where you will find the Maritime Museum which will provide you with an insight into South Australia’s maritime history, the Mortlock Library and the Art Gallery of South Australia.  An historic tour should include a visit to places of interest such as Ayers Historic House, the Edmund Wright House and Government House.

Australia’s oldest German settlement is located at Hahndorf, a popular destination for tourists and only a short drive through the Adelaide Hills.  The town has a variety of shops selling antiques, crafts  and traditional German items .  Other historic towns in the area worth visiting are Strathalbyn and Clarendon and the region also has extensive walking trails and parks.

South from Adelaide lies the Gulf of St Vincent, a large inlet of water, with a rugged coastline formed by Yorke Peninsula to the west and Fleurieu Peninsula to the south east.  This is a region of sandy beaches and fantastic seafood and speciality foods available in the numerous restaurants, cafes and eateries to be found in the coastal towns and villages.  Victor Harbour, once the regions major whaling station , is located on the Fleurieu Peninsula and is a popular holiday destination.

While on the Fleurieu Peninsula take the time to visit Willunga, known for its almond growing industry,  historic buildings and the Mount Magnificent Conservation Park. There are numerous walking tracks through the park, all part of the Heysen Trail. This 1200 km track extends from Parachilna Gorge in the Flinders Ranges through the Adelaide Hills to Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula.  Western Grey Kangaroos can be sighted on some of these trails.

Australia’s third largest island, Kangaroo Island sits 13 km offshore and is home to large colonies of sea lions and fairy penquins as well as a variety of Australian flora and fauna.  resides in the Flinders Chase National Park located at the end of the island. The major centre on kangaroo Island is Kinsgcote where you will delight in feeding the local pelicans on the wharf or go exploring the underground caves at Kelly Hill.
