The second half of the road to Hana is even more exiting than the first. As you approach the town of Wailua, you’ll pass some fruit stands selling homemade items and fruits. If you’re hungry for a snack, this is the place to stop.
History and also religion come into play on this road as you’re suggested to go to the Our Lady of Fatima Shrine. The followers of this quaint 1860′s chapel don’t use it anymore, however it’s in great shape.
Whatever else you do on the road to Hana, don’t lightly pass by the Ka’eleku Caverns, the Kahanu Garden or the sacred pools. This might be the opportunity to do a bit of spelunking, or to refresh your botanical knowledge, not to mention that if you bow out, you will miss a view that is provided to human eyes but once in a lifetime.
Close to the top of the mountain, almost to Hana is Wai’anapanapa State Park. The park is situated amongst an awesome black sand beach and has two caves which you can walk through. They really lead to the ocean, so be careful. I’ve heard that there’s a chance here for good snorkeling, however I’ll never find out. There are numerous signs warning would be swimmers of very large man of war, strong rip currents and sharks. Hmm, maybe I’ll sit this one out!
Hop back into the car and let’s get roaring to the peak of the trek! You may not be enormously impressed by the languorous little town, but strolling on the pier or even visiting the airport is not quite so bad either. After that fantastic road trip, the food will taste a bit more delicious than usual, won’t it? The hours, maybe even days spent in Hana are certain to be some of the most idyllic in your life.
You may, at this point, drive back down the mountain, once again relishing those attractions along the way. But, in case you and your car are made for adventure, you could continue on beyond Hana. The road though, or whatever passes for the road, is risky if you don’t know what you are doing.
There are several signs instructing drivers to honk to alert oncoming traffic, because it is only a one lane road. It is a little bit scary, though exciting at the same time and the view is unbelievable. This isolated road complete with ocean views on one side and also cow pastures only lasts for some miles, and then it is back to civilization.
Easily lost? Incredibly detailed and simple to use maps are accessible in most hotels as well as other shops or gas stations. Get one and get cracking! A dozen different, infinitely moving sceneries are out there just waiting for you.
