The Adventures of Going Reef Surfing

Surfing is your first love. You’ve always liked surfing ever since you got your first surfboard from your brother as a gift on your 21st birthday. Your problem however is you can only do this when you’re in Hawaii while on vacation or in Siargao, Philippines while you’re in the country.

Then the local government unit has decided to set up precautions in saving the ocean, the marine life that dwells in it, and set up some artificial reefs to encourage the fish and other marine creatures to populate whole area. It might be an amazement to you that these artificial reefs serve as the breakwater that results to having surfable waves. This is the time you discovered how to reef surf.

It’s actually the same as natural surfing only that people reef surf on waves that are produced by the reefs that surround the whole area. It’s not an issue of whether it made of natural or artificial ways, what matters more is that the waves they are creating are like manna from heaven to these surf reef enthusiasts.

You must be warned though that reef surfing can be more challenging than doing surfing on natural waves. Reefs that are formed naturally have spikes in them and they are solid as a rock which makes it deadly if you’ll fall off your surf board. If falling is inevitable, wearing a helmet will give you protection. You wouldn’t want to cut yourself right in the head and get a concussion in the process, right? Or you might just have your dignity crushed after a heavy fall which could have been avoided if you weren’t showing off your skills that much.

Never forget that reef surfing is a dangerous and challenging adventure but safety must be first priority when you go into the water in the intention of riding huge waves. Think of safety first. Through this you will be able to experience the joys in surfing having more confidence and full of excitement. When you’re sure that you have done the right moves, worn the proper gear, then this would make sure that you are then safe from harm’s way.

Popular beaches around the world that offer reef surfing adventures include the El Segundo, California beach, the Cable Beach in Perth, and a beach in Boscombe, UK which is believed to have 30% bigger waves and known to double the surfing adventures in UK yearly.

This information should be a cause for celebration for surfers like you as whether you are in the United States of America, in the South Pacific, or in the UK, you can reef surf anytime of the year.

When you are in the Philippines, Siargao is always the place to be. Happy surfing!
