Within Morocco, there are lots of officially declared World Heritage Sites. Sites get this special distinction from UNESCO for having invaluable cultural, historical, or natural significance on our planet, and this means they are great places to visit.
A majority of Morocco’s World Heritage Sites are either archaeological or historical sites. A very famous one is Valubilis. This site was a crucial town in Roman times. You could spend a very long time exploring the ruins of Valubilis, as there is a whole city worth of them. Two interesting buildings on this site to se are the Basilica and the Capitol. The Basilica still has a center aisle running down the middle, and the Capitol has retained many of its original columns. There are also a variety of mosaics around the site showing various episodes in Classical Roman Mythology, including the goddess of the moon, Diana.
Meknes is another very famous World Heritage Site in Morocco. It is similar to Valubilis in that it also has a very long history and is full of interesting things to see. It differs from Valubilis because people still live there. The palace of Dar El Makhzen is one of the most spectacular things to see. This palace was occupied by the ruler of Morocco, Moulay Ismail. He ruled over Morocco for 60 years throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. Bab Mansour gate is another interesting thing to see. It was built by the renowned El-Mansur, who used actual columns from the site of Valubilis to construct it. When Ismail asked El-Mansur if he was able to do better, El-Mansur replied yes, and Ismail had him executed.
There are so many cultural, historical, and religiously significant things to do in Morocco, but it’s refreshingly free of large crowds of tourists as well as free of tourist traps. Remember to get passports before you leave, however. Going online and accessing an expedited passport service can help you get ready for a trip in a snap, and they can also help you add passport pages or replace an expired passport.
