Things You Need To Know about Spending Time In Cambridge, England


Cambridge is known throughout the planet as home to the University of Cambridge, one of the most prestigious in Britain. The University has a total of some 31 colleges including; Peterhouse, Queens’ College, Robinson College and St Catharine’s College which dominate the city. Although a large number of visitors arrive in Cambridge to visit the University, Cambridge has a good number of other attractions besides the college buildings of the University.  Happily there are a large number of bed & breakfasts in Cambridge to choose from (Important: for more info see bottom of article).

The city is an ancient town dating back to the medieval period and subsequently there there are countless of excellent architecture. It is possible to wander amongst the medieval streets, relax one of the many gardens or parks or you might take a punt down the River Cam. If the idea of going punting appeals to you, then one should rent a punt or as an alternative you can rent a chauffeured punt. There are a small number of companies offering this service along the river. Another idea is a small journey up the River Cam in a narrow boat.

Cambridge is also widely known for its churches, thirteen of which are located within Cambridge’s confines. Of the 13 churches situated in Cambridge town centre it is All Saints Church which is said to be one of the best examples of Gothic revival architecture to be found in England. Another church of importance is Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which is one of only 4 round Norman churches found in England. The smallest church in Cambridge is St Peter’s Church, which is hidden away in a tranquil part of the town centre. Possibly the most breathtaking panoramas across the city of Cambridge and University colleges are to be found from the site of the University church, the Great St Mary’s Church.

Because there is a vast selection of visitor attractions available in Cambridge, it would be virtually impossible to view all of them in just one day.  We therefore advise that you stay for a minimum of two days in Cambridge. If you and your family are in the process of deciding upon spending some time in the city of  Cambridge it is vital that you reserve your  lodgings at your first opportunity because, sadly Cambridge hotels tend to be amazingly busy and are commonly fully booked months in advance. If your group is large you may find that Cambridge apartments are a less expensive alternative.
